The ERASMUS programme (European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) forms part of the Lifelong Learning programme (successor to the Socrates programme) that brings together various education and training initiatives promoted by the European Union.

Who was Erasmus?

Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466–1536), was a Dutch humanist, philosopher, philologist and geologist who spent the most important years of his life in different European countries, including France, Italy, the UK, Switzerland and Germany. He is one of the most important figures of the European Renaissance of the time. His great achievement was to decisively influence the development of Europe.

The Erasmus programme aims to address the teaching and learning requirements of all participants in formal higher education and higher professional training. To promote student mobility, the programme allows students to undertake a period of studies at a higher education institution in another European country.

The European Parliament has approved the Erasmus+ programme for the period 2014–20, which took effect on 1 January 2014. The new programme will focus on learning beyond the EU’s borders, opening up to other countries to improve educational and training capacities and promote the employability of students.
